Walking in Durham

One of the best ways to explore everything that Durham has to offer is on foot. Whether it's a leisurely city stroll along the banks of the River Wear, or a more strenuous walk in Durham’s great outdoors our routes were made for walking. The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Durham Dales and the Durham Heritage Coast are truly special places, with breathtaking views and dramatic landscapes. Hamsterley Forest is home to delightful woodland walks. And for the peace and tranquillity of the water, head to one of Durham’s many reservoirs or riverside routes. Durham has walking opportunities for all ages and abilities from quiet country roads and railway paths, to more challenging routes.

If you’re planning a walking holiday in Durham why not stay in a pub? Pubs are a great alternative to hotels and traditional B&B’s giving visitors a special experience incomparable to your average hotel. Pubs don’t just offer a warm comfortable bed after a long day walking but also offers delicious food and drink combined with the chance to socialise with locals and other walkers.

With all the modern features such as flat screen TV’s, Freeview, WiFi, comfortable bedding and tea and coffee making facilities you’ll be able to sit back and relax in your room after a long day out. In the evening choose from a range of home cooked dishes, from pub classics to meals with a twist. Meals are prepared by excellent chefs who use only the freshest locally sourced ingredients to give you a real taste of Durham. You'll be spoilt for choice!

In the evenings there’s plenty to keep you busy, with pubs offering a warm fire in the winter or a beer garden in the summer you can relax after dinner with a pint of real ale. Staying in a pub in Durham offers walkers the chance to find their own piece of paradise with many areas untouched and unspoilt.
