The Priory Church of St. Mary and St. MichaelCartmel Category Historic Sites
Cartmel Priory was an Augustinian Priory founded on the rule of St Augustine. Monks would pray without ceasing. St Augustine writes, “The deeper our faith, the stronger our hope, the greater our desire, the larger will be our capacity to receive the gift, which is very great indeed. .... The more fervent the desire, the more worthy will be its fruits. When the Apostle tells us: Pray without ceasing (1 Thes 5:16), he means this: Desire unceasingly that life of happiness which is nothing if not eternal, and ask it of him alone who is able to give it.” (Letter 130)
The Priory Church is a place of prayer and worship today echoing the words of St Augustine. We seek to be a place of hospitality and welcome following in the footsteps of the monks allowing this sacred space to refresh and sustain. The Church is open daily. You are most welcome.
Admission is free. Most of the Priory is accessible by wheel chair. Toilets are avaialble in the village.
