The Blue Lion inn, nestled in the breathtaking countryside of rural Wensleydale, encapsulates everything that is great about the good British inn including being dog friendly.
The kerb appeal of this traditional stone pub attracts visitors from far and wide, as well as denizens of loyal locals who enjoy a drink or two at the cosy bar complete with roaring log fire and well-worn oak tables. Settle in with a paper and enjoy the wide range of real ales available or lose yourself in their extensive wine list, all personally selected by the owner to ensure that there’s one for any taste or time of day.
Should hunger strike, just a glance at the chalked-up menu board will tempt and delight – freshly prepared and seasonal, diners are spoilt for choice. Favourites include cassoulet of Yorkshire duck confit, blue Wensleydale cheese and leek risotto and grilled fillet of halibut. The service, all delivered by a dedicated and long-serving team, is excellent and delivered with plenty of that famous Yorkshire charm.
There are 15 comfortable and country-styled en-suite rooms at the Blue Lion, several of which have the added bonus of being dog friendly, just mention that you’re bringing your four-legged friend when you book. The rooms are split between the main building and the converted stables and each has its own unique design. We hear that room 15 is the most popular, its private garden access and high beamed ceiling obviously appeals to the large number of guests to the inn.
It’s hard to beat Wensleydale if you’re looking at a Yorkshire getaway. Basing yourself at the Blue Lion allows easy access to stunning walks complete with waterfalls, ample bird watching sites, fishing on the River Ure, Jervaulx Abbey and even the home of Wallace and Gromit’s favourite cheese, Wensleydale Creamery.
