Details

The Twice Brewed Inn is set amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery in England and stands in the shadows of Steel Rigg, without doubt one of the most dramatic parts of Hadrian’s Wall.

The inn is situated on the Military Road midway between Newcastle Upon Tyne in the East and Carlisle in the West and is close to a host of historic Roman sites – Vindolanda, Housesteads and The Roman Army Museum. The inn is on the popular Pennine Way route and welcomes walkers with a drying room and other useful facilities. They are situated on the Hadrians Cycleway and near the Sandstone Way cycle route.

There are several stories which explain the name of the inn; the most romantic story tells that on the eve of the Battle of Hexham in 1464, Yorkist foot soldiers demanded their beer be brewed again because it lacked its usual and vital fighting strength. The ploy certainly worked as the Lancastrian army fled after an early morning raid. A more prosaic explanation is that 18th-century farmers tended to brew weak ale, and hence “twice brewed” meant the inn offered stronger ale. A third theory is that Hadrian’s Wall snakes its way across the brows, or “brews”, of two hills where there is also a meeting of a pair of drovers’ roads.

Relax in the bar in front of a roaring fire where you can enjoy real ales, beers from around the world, an international wine selection and a rather more locally themed menu showcasing the very best of local produce. The inn has its own on site brew house and beer has been brewed on the site for over 500 years and they also sell gift packs of their beers.

Situated at the heart of Hadrian’s Wall they strive to use the best local produce available. If you have any special dietary needs please don’t hesitate to ask a member of staff to assist you. The food is freshly prepared so please be patient, they do not serve fast food, only delicious food as fast as they can. Their calendar of events sees regular special menus and offers for you to choose from. They also have a brand new private function room available for hire so whether you’re celebrating a wedding, birthday, your retirement, graduation or anything else, The Twice Brewed is the perfect place to be.

They boast nineteen welcoming and comfortable bedrooms that have all been carefully modernised to a luxurious standard to provide cosy Northumberland accommodation. All the rooms are packed with little luxuries to ensure a relaxing stay including a TV, digital alarm clock, tea, coffee and biscuits, capsule coffee machine, kettle, ironing facilities, fresh linen, fluffy towels, toiletries and free WiFi.
